The grapes for the 2007 Almirez came from 30-year-old ungrafted
head pruned vines. The wine was aged for 12 months in one-year-old
French oak. Deep crimson-colored, it displays an expressive nose
of spice box, espresso, plum, and blackberry compote. Full-bodied
on the palate with layers of savory black fruits, lots of spice,
and enough fine-grained tannin to evolve for 1-2 years, it will
drink beautifully from 2011 to 2019. It is an excellent value that
over-delivers in a big way.
Bodegas
Teso La Monja is the Eguren familys new project in Toro featuring
a state of the art winery and old vines of Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo).
The sandy soils here meant that phylloxera never took hold so that
most of the vines are ungrafted.

Chateau
la Fleur is a small estate that dates back to 1898, although before
1949, it operated under the names of "Cru Merissac" and
"la Fleur Merissac", respectively. It was owned by Miss
Lily Lacoste (owner of Chateau Petrus & Latour-a-Pomerol) who
sold it to J.P. Moueix in the 1960s. The estate changed hands again
in 2002, and it is now owned by Laurent Dassault, the heir to the
aeronautics dynasty. Laurence Brun manages the estate and Romain
Depons is the winemaker. Michel Rolland is the consultingf enologist.
The estate produces a total of 20,000 bottles; a rather small output.
Dark
ruby in color, almost purple. Shows intense blackberry, with mineral,
fresh tobacco and cigar box aromas. Full-bodied, with supersilky
tannins and a long, pretty finish.

"From our best vineyards in Altamira (at 1,150 meters [almost
3,773 ft] above sea level) and Gualtallary (at 1,350 meters [almost
4,430 ft] above sea level), Doña Paula Estate Malbec displays
the unique characteristics of the Uco Valley, a terroir with cold
climate, mineral and rocky soils." - Winery Notes.
Ripe
and flashy, but pulls it off, with gorgeous mouthfeel and loads
of lush raspberry ganache, boysenberry and plum sauce notes, all
kept going by a graphite streak on the lengthy finish. Drink now.
51,000 cases imported. JM
